Purgatory
Purgatory is the half way point between Heaven and Hell. Souls who were unable to make it into Heaven, but not evil enough to go to Hell, go through the purification process in the realm of Purgatory. The place is an extremely large mountain composed of seven terraces, which end in the Garden of Eden. A soul's stay in Purgatory depends heavily upon their sins and if they feel prepared to move onto the next terraces. Unlike in Hell, the human mind does not make punishment in Purgatory worse, as there is the constant reminder that they will enter Heaven.
The seven terraces respond to the seven deadly sins, and have unique purification rituals in each, described by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy portion entitled Purgatorio.
