Nocens Somnium

Scene 1

(33,000 BCE, Heaven.  Metatron is asleep in his bed.  His hair is longer than we have sever seen before, to his shoulders, predominantly black with only a few streaks of white.  He looks far younger than we have ever seen as well.  He wears no shirt and a pair of green PJ pants.  Metatron looks to be in better shape as well.  His room is medium sized with dark blue walls and light oak furniture.  The bed has blue sheets with gold accents.  A clock by his bedside reads 3:43 AM.  The door to the bedroom opens.  In dashes a young Lucifer, about 5 years old.  Young Lucifer’s hair is short, only to his chin and is extremely curly.  He is dressed in red PJs and has a look of terror on his face.  He leaps onto Metatron’s bed and shakes Metatron wildly.)

Lucifer:  Metatron!  Metatron, wake up!

(Metatron turns over slowly and opens his eyes.)

Metatron: Hmmm?

(Lucifer seats himself on Metatron’s chest and shoves his face into his mentor’s.)

Lucifer:  Waaaake uuuuup!

Metatron:  (Instantly irritated.)  Dammit Lucifer, what are you doing in here?

Lucifer:  I had a really, really bad dream and couldn’t sleep.

(Metatron sighs and sits up slightly.  Lucifer clings to Metatron’s chest.)

Metatron: God, what time is it?  (He looks over at the clock and groans.)  Alright, alright.  Loosen up your grip and tell me about the dream.

(Lucifer lets go of Metatron’s chest, but remains seated.)

Lucifer:  I fell asleep and started having this really weird dream.  There was a really big person who looked like God and had the feel of God, but I could tell it wasn’t God.  I dunno how I knew I just….did…and the God that wasn’t God started attacking me with big lightening bolts!  Really fast!  Like, I would move to dodge one and another one would come right at me!  And it was really scary.  So to get away I hid in a cave that I found.  Except when I got into that cave it was really hot and fire started to shoot at me.  And then I caught on fire and my wings were on fire and I ran around and then I could feel myself on fire and then I just got so scared and I woke up and ran here.  (He stares up at Metatron.)  It was scary.

Metatron:  (Nods slowly.)  I see.  Did you think to try going back to sleep?

Lucifer: (Stares at Metatron, wide eyed.)  Why?!

Metatron:  Well, it’s possible that if you had stayed asleep the dream might have ended better.

Lucifer:  (Sniffling.)  But I was on fire!  You woulda woken up scared too!

Metatron:  (Nods slowly.)  Mm, perhaps.  Then again, perhaps not.

Lucifer:  You woulda.  (He whimpers.)  Can I stay here tonight?  I’m scared that if I fall asleep in my own bed I’ll have the same dream.  Or maybe one that’s scarier.

(Metatron takes a deep breath and pauses to think.  He looks at Lucifer long and hard.  Lucifer pouts at Metatron, pleading.)

Metatron: The sad puppy dog look isn’t going to work you know.

Lucifer:  Pleeeeaaaaaaaase?

Metatron: Absolutely not.  How old are you?

Lucifer:  Five.

Metatron: Most five year olds sleep in their own beds, even after bad dreams.

Lucifer:  No they don’t.  (He frowns.)  I’ve heard Duma wake up a lot in the middle of the night and not come back until the next morning.

Metatron:  Am I Duma’s mentor?

Lucifer:  No but--

Metatron:  Then I don’t wanna hear it.

Lucifer:  But!

(Metatron sighs and looks at the clock.)

Metatron:  It’s 3:56 in the morning.  I don’t feel like arguing with you.  (He shakes his head.)  You can stay but only for tonight.  Do not make a habit out of this.  Clear?

(Lucifer has already snuggled under the covers and made himself comfortable.)

Metatron:  I said, am I clear?

Lucifer:  (Sleepily.)  Yessir.  G’night.

(Metatron pulls the covers over himself and sighs.)

Metatron:  Good night, Lucifer.
